Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone) and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sings in English, Spanish and Spanglish with a mix of sounds, from rock to Hip- Hop to rancheras. The group’s Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms and rhymes deliver inspiring lyrics that document stories of a community seeking love and justice in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. Born and raised east of the Los Angeles River, Las Cafeteras is remixing roots music and telling modern-day stories to create a vibrant musical fusion with a unique East L.A. The band has toured the world, bringing its electric sound and energy and playing shows from the Bonnaroo to the Hollywood Bowl, WOMAD New Zealand to Montreal Jazz, and beyond.
Las Cafeteras has taken the music scene by storm with its infectious live performances, which cross genre and musical borders. The second event, “A Night with Juke Bounce Werk” (September 4, 2021), concludes Summer SoundWaves with featured guest JLin and a host of DJs, including DJ Clent and DJ SWISHA dropping House beats at The Music Center.
